Coconut Oil: Direct Micro Expelling (DME)

The DME™ Standard is a set of quality and ethical standards that the Direct Micro Expelling method of producing virgin coconut oil achieves and Kokonut Pacific adheres to. Our "best practice" process guarantees an exceptionally high quality of oil for the world market, sustainable production for the operators, and maintenance of renewable resources for the earth.

We claim that the DME Standard fully justifies the naming of this coconut oil as " Virgin" or DME-EVCO. DME™ Virgin Coconut Oil is the best choice for quality, taste and health. Only DME™ guarantees freshness with Organic Certification and Fair Trade practices.

Due to outstanding quality production principles, DME™ coconut oil
maybe labeled as:

  • Certified Organic: DME™ Virgin Coconut Oil is made from mature, ripe, organically grown coconuts and is produced without artificial fertilizers, pesticides, or other chemicals and additives.

  • Cold Pressed: Due to the relatively low temperatures used to dry the grated coconut prior to pressing our coconut oil is considered coldpressed.

  • Hand Pressed: The oil press is manually operated.

  • Virgin: The oil is obtained from the first and only pressing, within an hour of opening the coconut.

Direct Micro Expelling™ uses a totally different approach to coconut compared to that of the copra industry. With DME we take (small-scale) processing to the nuts rather than taking the nuts (in debased form) to a (large-scale) processing plant. A consequence is that we produce a virgin coconut oil of vastly superior quality. Our process DOES involve heat in the sense that we semi-dry the raw material before pressing out the oil. This heating process is gentle in that the material is constantly turned and tossed in the air to speed up the drying process.

This stage takes about 30 to 45 minutes (depending on the humidity, temperature, breeze etc). The "chef" in the team of 3 to 5 family workers tests the material (that is ready for pressing) by squeezing it in her (usually it not subjected to the high temperatures of most other oil ction systems. It is usually between 45°C (110°F) and 60°C (130°F) immediately before pressing. This is "cold" by oil standards. The oil is not heated at all after pressing.

Direct Micro Expelling (DME™) uses an entirely different approach. It takes the processing right back to the farm level. It enables rural families on tropical coasts to produce pure virgin oil within one hour of opening their coconuts.

These coconuts are grown and processed organically, without the use of fertilizers or other chemical inputs.
