Coconut Oil for Health, Weight Loss, Digestion, Infection, Blood Sugar, Immunity, Liver & Prostrate Health
The benefits of high quality fresh coconut oil are many. As more and more people discover the healthful and healing qualities of raw coconut oil, the list of benefits continues to grow. Most scientists are just beginning to understand what indigenous people of the tropics have known for centuries.
Boost nutrient absorption
Increasing the amount of nutrients the body absorbs leads to increased nourishment of cells and improved health. Those working to regain health may especially benefit from the improved nutrient absorption that results from consuming unrefined coconut oil. As published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition a study done at the University of Iowa showed that when babies were fed formula rich in high quality coconut oil they showed improved absorption of fats and minerals.
Those concerned about osteoporosis may benefit from consuming good coconut oil since it increases mineral absorption to build and strengthen bones.
Increase energy
Increased nutrient absorption also leads to increased energy. In addition, unrefined coconut oil does not inhibit thyroid function, as unsaturated vegetable oils may, which also aids in improved energy levels, as well as weight management. Those with chronic fatigue syndrome may benefit from high quality coconut oil consumption since its many contributing factors such as poor nutrient absorption, excessive stress, toxins, viruses, bacteria and fungi may be beneficially affected.
Lose weight
It’s true! Unrefined coconut oil is a fat that is easily converted to energy and is not stored in the body as fat. Cutting edge researchers and nutritionists are telling people to eat fat to lose fat-but make sure it’s the right kind of fat!
Coconut oil has less calories than other forms of fat, which may aid in weight loss. More importantly, however, is the fact that the medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) making up truly organic coconut oil provide a sense of satisfied fullness leading to reduced food intake. In addition, a report published in the Journal of Nutrition examined almost 30 scientific studies to find that diets high in MCFAs increased metabolism and therefore favourably affect body fat and weight.
Metabolism is the total of all the chemical processes that the body uses to convert food to the chemicals it needs for energy as well as for repair, maintenance and growth. Earlier studies have shown us that a person with a high metabolism burns calories more quickly than a person with a lower rate.
Aid digestion
Digestive disorders are common in today’s society. Because coconut oil is easy to digest, it improves nutrient absorption, protects from infection and decreases inflammation. It is an excellent choice for those suffering with intestinal conditions. Research shows, for example, that the anti-inflammatory properties of high quality coconut oil help to reduce the irritation that accompanies Crohn’s disease.
The bacteria and viruses that are often cited as contributing factors or causes of ulcerative conditions may be fought with the antimicrobial properties present in unrefined coconut oil. In addition, those with gallbladder problems, or difficulty digesting fats, may benefit from consuming coconut oil since it does not require pancreatic enzymes of bile for its breakdown and metabolism.
Fight infection
The powerful antifungal and antimicrobial properties in unrefined coconut oil are effective in supporting the treatment of a wide range of bacteria, fungi and viruses, including herpes simplex. Both the Lauric and capric acids in high quality coconut oil are beneficial in helping treat intestinal yeast infections such as candidiasis. In the body, Lauric acid is converted into monolaurin, which appears to inactivate or destroy lipid enveloped viruses, such as HIV, measles, vesticular stomatitis virus (VSV), herpes simplex virus (HSV-1), visne, cytomegalic virus (CMV), Influenza– Pneumono–Syncytial–virus and Rubeola. While antibiotics do nothing to prevent or treat viruses, truly organic coconut oil may help to do both. According to researcher, Stephen Byrnes, PhD, the first clinical trial involving monolaurin has recently been completed in the Philippines. The results indicate a greater than 50 percent reduced viral load in
subjects. The study also showed that the patients using good coconut oil showed better results than those simply taking monolaurin supplements.
Balance blood sugar
Since coconut oil is a saturated fat, it is a slow-release source of fuel. A slow-release fuel helps to maintain blood sugar levels in the body, which will help to prevent hypoglycemia, which is a precursor to type 2 diabetes.
Since coconut oil does not require pancreatic enzymes and does not raise blood sugar levels, it is a fat that diabetics can enjoy and benefit from. Coconut oil’s ability to increase metabolic rate and aid in weight loss is also a benefit for those with type 2 diabetes.
Prevent degenerative diseases
Because natural unrefined coconut oil protects the blood from free radical damage it is a help in the prevention of cardiovascular disease and cancer. Raw coconut oil does not become rancid as easily as other fats do and is not toxic due to processing procedures.
Thus it spares consumers from toxicity and free radical damage. In addition, high quality coconut oil may aid the body in eliminating disease-causing germs, which relieves stress on the immune system. This allows the white blood cells to function more efficiently, which helps to eliminate cancerous cells and prevent development of cancer.
Increase immunity
Unprocessed coconut oil has also been shown to benefit the immune system, which is the control center for overall health and defense against disease. Enig’s research suggests that those who have compromised immunity should eat approximately 25 grams of Lauric acid per day, which is equivalent to about four tablespoons of unrefined coconut oil. Research has shown that Lauric
and capric acids, both of which are found in high quality coconut oil, are effective in killing HIV in lab cultures. Many people living with HIV have reported a decrease in their viral load and improved overall health as a result of including unrefined coconut oil in their diets. Decrease inflammation: While anti-inflammatory drugs simply mask symptoms and interrupt the natural healing process, unrefined coconut oil may help reduce the inflammation naturally to aid
healing. A British study, published in the journal, Immunology, concluded that coconut oil may be useful in the treatment of both acute and chronic inflammation and inflammatory diseases.
Protect the liver
Unlike other fatty acids the MCFAs in unrefined coconut oil are absorbed directly from the intestines and sent straight to the liver where they are burned as fuel and can help liver function in many ways. One study showed that high quality coconut oil can help to prevent alcohol-induced liver damage by inhibiting the formation of free radicals.
Additional research has suggested that unrefined coconut oil may also help to rejuvenate
damaged liver tissue.
Protect the prostate
Researchers believe that a contributing factor to enlarged prostate in men, or benign prostatic
hyperplasia (BHP), involves the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). It appears this male hormone accumulates in the prostate gland and encourages the growth of prostate cells, causing enlargement. The herb Saw Palmetto has shown great success in treating enlarged prostate because it blocks the conversion of testosterone into DHT.
Since many of the fatty acids found in Saw Palmetto are MCFAs similar to those in coconut, experts are suggesting that coconut oil may work to treat and prevent enlarged prostate as well.
Improve skin health and beauty
In addition to the benefits of consuming natural, unadulterated coconut oil, this healthpromoting
oil has been used in the tropics for thousands of years as a skin lotion. It offers protection from the sun and wind as well as helping to heal skin conditions, burns and injuries. According to a double-blind study conducted by the Department of Dermatology, Makati Medical Center, in the
Philippines, coconut oil is more effective and safer than mineral oil when used as a moisturizer
for common conditions such as dry, rough, scaly and itchy skin. The oil is often used to treat and alleviate symptoms of eczema and even diaper rash. It absorbs quickly, has a mild pleasant smell and does not leave the skin feeling sticky.
It is no coincidence that tropical men and women have beautiful, healthy-looking skin and hair. A small amount of high quality coconut oil makes wonderful massage oil and can also be applied to hair as a pre-shampooing moisturizer. Ultimately, however, coconut oil will mostly be used in cooking so that one may be protected from the free radical damage that ages skin and contributes to wrinkles.
